Belliard had a career year with the Indians in 2005, and was traded mid-season to the Cardinals the following year. Playing a reserve role for St. Louis, he won a World Series ring in 2006. The 5-foot-8, 214-pound Belliard is an average defensive player, and most of his value is tied to his ability to spray the ball around the field. He's in the final season of a two-year contract he signed before last year.

Since changing organizations, Garate has had some success as a bullpen arm. At 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, he sits 88-92 mph with his fastball which he delivers from a low three-quarters arm angle. It doesn't hurt that Belliard has been hot of late. The Nationals aren't going anywhere in 2009, and they know it, so Belliard was a nonessential chip. In return, they acquire two potential bullpen arms.

The Deal 찰리 헤거의 콜업과 파디야의 마이너딜을 하며 다저스는 로테이션의 구멍을 어느정도 메웠다. 하지만 애리조나와 웨어버 트레이드를 통해 갈랜드를 얻으면서 로테이션의 격차는 더 좋아졌다. 다저스는 갈랜드를 받고 어브레유(미확정)를 줌으로써 딜을 완성할 수가 있었다.

In calling up knuckleballer Charlie Haeger and signing Vicente Padilla to a minor league deal, the Dodgers tried to fill the holes left in their rotation. But Los Angeles found a better stop-gap when it acquired 29-year-old righthander Jon Garland in a waiver deal with the Diamondbacks. He has also posted a combined 1-0 record in three starts against division rivals San Francisco and Colorado this year, allowing eight runs in 22 innings. Garland has a mutual option for $10 million next year, but he could also pitch his way to a new contract down the stretch.

Abreu, 25, is a switch-hitting second baseman from the Dominican Republic. He was an international sign in '02 who slowly made his way through the Dodgers system. In 49 games for Triple-A Albuquerque this year, Abreu was hitting .351/.382/.609 with 16 doubles, 10 home runs and 44 RBIs. His power numbers this year are a bit of a mirage, thanks to the friendly hitting environment at Isotopes Park and in the Pacific Coast League, in general. Abreu missed half of '07 and all of '08 with groin and hip injuries. Before those injuries slowed him down, he had above average speed. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound Abreu was a shortstop early in his career, but profiles as a major league second baseman. He could also play some third base as an extra infielder.

Quick Take 일요일 구로다가 돌아오면서 로테이션이 갑자기 좋아보인다. 분명 갈랜드의 획득은 5선발에서 꽤나 좋은 상태이며 디백스는 갈랜드와 내년에 함께할 마음이 없는지라 그를 보내고 미래에 2루수가 될 수있어보이는 녀석을 데려올 수 있었다.

With Hiroki Kuroda scheduled to return from the DL on Sunday, the Dodgers rotation suddenly looks solid. Garland provides Los Angeles with a serviceable fifth starter. The Diamondbacks weren't going to keep Garland around next year, but picked up a potential starting second baseman of the future, especially considering they don't have a long-term solution at the position.

Aug. 31 • Ramirez Welcomes Jim Thome To Mannywood

The Deal 작년 NLCS에서 필리스를 통해 다저스는 왼손대타의 중요성을 알았다. 해서 다저스도 커리어 586홈런에 빛나는 토미를 데려오는 결정을 내렸고, 그를 받은 다저스는 시삭스에게 상위 싱글 A팀의 내야수인 저스틴 풀러를 내줬다.

In facing the Phillies in last year's NLCS, the Dodgers learned firsthand the value of having a potent lefthanded bat on the bench. Veteran Matt Stairs, a Phillies' acquisition last August, walloped a crucial Game 4 home run that all but but sealed the Dodgers' fate. Perhaps with that in mind, Los Angeles made a trade with the White Sox to acquire 39-year-old Jim Thome, he of 586 career home runs. Through 107 games for the White Sox this year, playing strictly at DH, Thome was hitting .249/.372/.493 with 15 doubles, 23 home runs and 74 RBIs. He hasn't played first base regularly since '04 with the Phillies, and he hasn't played there at all there since '07. 토미는 스스로 긴급상화에서는 1루수로 나설 수 있다는 말을 했지만, 어느 누구도 그가 로니의 자리를 위협하리라고 생각하는 사람은 없었다. 토미는 올시즌 후 FA가 되며 시삭스는 그를 보내면서 약간의 돈(1M)을 세이브할 수 있었다. Thome said he can fill in at first in emergency situations, but no one expects Thome to take away from James Loney's playing time. In the final year of his deal, Thome is eligible to become a free agent after the season, and the White Sox cash to help the Dodgers pay the remaining money on his $13 million deal.

The Young Player 06년 아이다호 출신의 풀러는 솔리드한 미들 인필더이며 좋은 레인지와 어깨를 자랑하고 있다. 일단 올시즌 유격수로 많은 경기에 출전했지만 그는 결국 더 높은 레벨에서 2루수가 될 것 같다. 풀러는 라인드라이브히터이며 갭파워가 좋은 선수이며 (루상에서) 평균적인 스피드를 보유한 선수이다. 그는 더 높은 레벨로 올라가기엔 부족하지만, 때론 드라마틱한 일도 발생하는지라....그렇게 되면 풀러는 좋은 조직내 플레이어가 될 것이다.(결국, 빅리거가 될거라는 소리는 안하네요.)

Fuller, 26, was the Dodgers' 11th-round pick in 2006 out of Lewis-Clark State (Idaho). A solid defensive middle infielder, he offers solid range and a strong arm. He profiles better as a second baseman at higher levels, but he's played just as much shortstop this season. For high Class A Inland Empire, Fuller was hitting .254/.340/.418 with 11 doubles, four home runs and 17 RBIs. A lefthanded hitter, Fuller has a line-drive swing that creates gap-to-gap power. He has fringe-average speed. The Juneau, Alaska, native hasn't hit enough to propel himself to higher levels of the minors. Unless something drastic happens, Fuller would seem to be a nice organizational player.

Quick Take 90년대 후반 다이너스티 스러움을 만들었던 토미와 매니는 9년만에 제회했고, 이 둘의 홈런(1,106HR)은 빅리그에서 어느 누구보다 많은 홈런을 기록한 콤비가 되었다. 시삭스는 시즌 8월말에 삽질하면서 남은 시즌을 토미와 보낼 이유가 없어져버렸다. 그리고 토미를 컨텐더팀에 보냄으로써 그에게 플옵에서 뛸 기회를 줬다.

Manny Ramirez and Thome are reunited in Los Angeles, nine years after they played together with the near dynastic late-'90s Indians. Combined, Ramirez and Thome have 1,106 career home runs, the most for any two teammates in the major leagues. The White Sox have struggled of late, and didn't need Thome for the rest of the season. Plus, in trading the veteran to a contender they give him an opportunity to play deep in to October—and Thome has never played for a World Series winner.
