Jeff Weaver has undoubtedly been a pleasant surprise for the Dodgers this season.

The 32-year-old right-hander has allowed just one earned run over nine innings and will be making his second Major League start since 2007 when he toes the rubber against the Giants at Dodger Stadium on Sunday.

But there will be added pressure as Weaver will go up against right-hander Tim Lincecum, who won the National League Cy Young Award last season and is 3-1 with a 3.05 ERA this season.

Weaver, though, said it's important not to focus on Lincecum but instead to focus on the Giants' hitters.

"You're pitching against their lineup," Weaver said. "You're worrying about the hitters and not the pitcher on the mound for them. Your objective is to put zeros on the board no matter who's out there."

But that doesn't mean that Weaver isn't impressed by the 24-year-old Lincecum, who has 50 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings.

"He's got great stuff and he's young," Weaver said. "He's got a live arm and those are the kind of guys you want to go up against. You want to compete against the best and he's obviously shown that the last year. So it'll be a battle and we'll see if we end up on top."

It'll be quite the litmus test for Weaver, who wasn't even in the Majors last season and was signed to a Minor League deal with the Dodgers in February.

But Weaver pitched well in Spring Training, and after spending some time with Triple-A Albuquerque, he was called up on April 30. He pitched four scoreless innings that day, and then just six days later he was in the Dodgers' starting rotation after rookie James McDonald struggled in his starting role.

Weaver was solid in his last start against the Diamondbacks, giving up just one run on five hits in five innings to pick up the win.

"It's obviously what you're looking for," Weaver said of his fast start. "It gives you confidence early especially after the roller-coaster ride I've had over the last year or so. I'm just fortunate to have this opportunity to help the team win."

Weaver had nothing but positive things to say about the Dodgers organization for taking a chance on him this season. It was a win-win for Weaver because he grew up locally in nearby Simi Valley and he pitched for the Dodgers in 2004 and 2005, combining for 27 wins and a 4.11 ERA in those two seasons.

"I was happy to get back to an organization that I'd done well with and was comfortable with but at the same time they've been consistently winning," Weaver said. "As a free agent, I wanted to get a chance to play with a chance to win, and we're doing that. So hopefully we can ride that good start the rest of the way."

Pitching matchup
LAD: RHP Jeff Weaver (1-0, 1.00 ERA)
Weaver was a vast improvement over McDonald, the rookie he replaced in the rotation. On Tuesday, in his first Major League start since 2007 and first as a Dodger since 2005, Weaver allowed one run on a wild pitch, struck out six and walked one in five innings, throwing a season-high 85 pitches. He had runners in scoring positon in four of the innings, but the Diamondbacks went 0-for-9 against him in those situations. Weaver is 3-5 with a 4.97 ERA lifetime against the Giants.

SF: RHP Tim Lincecum (3-1, 3.05 ERA)
The National League's reigning Cy Young Award winner has won his last three starts. His resurgence actually encompasses four starts; in that span, he has recorded a 1.80 ERA with 40 strikeouts and six walks in 30 innings. Lincecum has lowered his ERA from 7.56. The Giants obviously feel more comfortable with Lincecum on the mound: They have scored five runs or more eight times, and on four of those occasions Lincecum was pitching. He's 3-0 lifetime against the Dodgers.

Tidbits
Dodgers manager Joe Torre said that left-hander Hong-Chih Kuo, who is on the disabled list with a sore left elbow, is scheduled to leave for Glendale, Ariz., in a week to get work in at the Dodgers' Spring Training facility. But Kuo still hasn't played catch as part of his rehab process. Meanwhile, injured right-hander Hiroki Kuroda, on the disabled list with a left oblique strain, is scheduled to throw off a mound as early as Sunday. ... Dodgers players and coaches will greet fans at the turnstiles with Mother's Day roses Sunday before the Dodgers host the Giants. Also, selected moms and daughters will take the field with the players as part of Mothers Take the Field. ... Left-hander Eric Stults had a no-hitter through 4 1/3 innings Saturday before it was broken up by a double by Aaron Rowand. ... Catcher Russell Martin and third baseman Casey Blake are scheduled to have the day off Sunday.

20 starts
107.2 innings (5.38 per start)
108 hits
47 earned runs
41 walks (3.4 per 9)
77 strikeouts (6.4 per 9)
10 homers allowed (0.84 per 9)
3.93 ERA (112 ERA+*)
3.99 FIP
.258/.330/.401 opponents' batting line
8-7 record (Dodgers are 12-8)

총 20번의 빅리그 선발 등판을 끝낸 스털츠의 기록입니다. 이 정도면 땜빵형 선수로는 대단하다는 생각이 드네요. 그 카테고리 안에서 말이죠.
