Prospect Profiles 2009 : Jon Michael Redding

Overview-  Taken in the 5th round of the 2008 draft, Redding was a surprise pick out of Florida Community College. Not many teams were that high on Redding, but Logan White and company were intrigued by his upside and command. Like many of the young Dodger arms in the system, Redding has still got to prove himself in 2009, but there's much to like here.

Stuff - He has three solid offerings, and it all starts with his fastball. He usually sits 90-92 mph while touching 94, and it has good arm-side sink. His curve sits in the 77-79 mph range, and it could use some work to get sharper downward action. Redding also offers a change, but seems hesitant to use it, and must incorporate it to be effective in the long-run. At this point, his main concern should be the refinement of his breaking pitches.

Mechanics - I would need to see more of his games to make a definite judgment, but he has a repeatable delivery with good arm action. It's part of the reason why I think his change could be an effective offering going forward. Mechanically, there's nothing that I see which would predispose him to injury. His timing is good, and he generates velocity with solid separation of his hips. I suppose his front-side mechanics could use some cleaning up, but nothing major.

Performance-His ERA of 5.17 seems to indicate that Redding's professional debut was rather ugly, but it's extremely misleading. His FIP was a more reasonable 3.90, and his numbers suffered mainly because of an extremely unlucky BABIP (.401) and LOB% (57.0). Redding only walked 7.6% of the batters he faced while striking out 25.0% of them, so his main peripherals are solid. Most importantly, his GB% was 52.0, and he's likely to have continued success going forward if he can maintain that.

Projection - Even if Redding refines his curve and develops a solid change, his ceiling is still probably as a #3 guy because he doesn't have explosive stuff. Still, I liked what I saw and i'll give him a relatively good chance of achieving his potential. On that note though, he still has a long way to go and there's always a lot of things that can go wrong on the way to the majors.

Given his age, the Dodgers will probably start him at low-A ball, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him move to high-A later in the year. I could see him in a Dodger uniform on a short-term basis as early as 2011, but 2012 is a safer bet.
