Peter Gammons, the Hall of Fame baseball reporter, had a chat today on the Boston Globe's website and weighed in on Manny Ramirez, Brad Penny, the Dodgers and other winter musings. Here are some excerpts.

-- Where Manny Ramirez will end up: "The Giants have already said they are not in on them. The winter of disinformation from the agents has been astounding. The Mets have told Scott Boras [Ramirez's agent] they are not interested in Manny. The fact that the Wilpon family [who own the Mets] lost $500 m[illion] in the Madoff scandal makes Manny's plight seem pretty ridiculous. The question that the Dodgers have right now, if they go back to two years at $45 m[illion], will Manny be very unhappy? There was a report this week that the Dodgers have discussed going into the [free agent] market and signing a discounted OF like Bobby Abreu for one year, then going into the market for Matt Holliday next winter." -- Why the Red Sox signed Brad Penny: "What's interesting about Penny, is that if he had gone out on the [free agent] market last winter, he would have gotten an A.J. Burnettcontract [because] he was coming off finishing third in the Cy Young race. He did break down the last three months [of last season with the Dodgers], but Burnett has broken down 2-3 times himself. Over the last three years, Burnett and Penny have each won 38 games, and Burnett has only averaged 10 more innings a season. One of the reasons Penny wanted Boston was (because) of the way that Terry Francona and John Farrell handle pitchers, so there's a good chance he can turn out to be a major contributor." (레드삭스가 왜 페니를 영입했냐? 질문에 대해서 만약 그가 작년 사이영 투표 3위를 차지했을때 겨울에 나왔다면 버넷급의 계약을 체결했으나 부상으로 인해 시즌 막판 3달을 제대로 뛰지도 못했다는 것.하지만 버넷도 그런적이 있고 지난 3년과 버넷과 페니는 38승으로 동률이고 버넷이 단지 시즌당 평균 10이닝씩 더 던졌을뿐이라고 이야기하고 있군요.또한 페니는 테리 프랑코나와 존 패럴 코치가 있는 보스턴을 원했고 팀에 공헌하겠다란 마음이 강했다고 합니다.일단 부상만 없다면 500+ 300(인센티브)인데 800만불을 다 받아가면 보스턴 입장에서도 대박이죠.800만불로 2~3선발급 성적을 올려주는걸테니 문제는 500만불만 딱 받고 09시즌을 끝마치는건데 이게 최악이겠죠.)
-- On the Red Sox shopping for a catcher: "Early in the fall, they tried to make a run at Russell Martin of the Dodgers and Mike Napoli of the Angels, but without success." (레드삭스의 포수 영입에 대해서는 레드삭스가 다저스의 마틴과 엔젤스의 나폴리 영입을 하려고 했으나 오프시즌 초반에 실패했다고 나폴리는 잘 모르겠는데 마틴 이야기는 사실이 아니죠.현재는 디백스의 몬테로를 영입하려 하고 있다란 이야기가 돌고 있죠.)
