Ethan Martin has been a little inconsistent in his first year with the 66ers.

Either he's been good, or he's been bad. There's been little in between.

But on Thursday, Martin was even better than good.

Martin pitched a three-hitter, walking two and striking out nine as the 66ers downed Bakersfield, 5-0, in front of 1,362 at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.

The win improves the Sixers to 17-31 overall and 5-18 at home, the second-worst home record in minor league baseball. Bakersfield dropped to 19-26 overall.

Martin (5-3) threw 97 pitches, retiring the last 10 batters and allowing only two baserunners in the final five innings. It was only the second complete-game shutout in the league this year and first by a Sixers pitcher since Mario Alvarez last July 31 against Lancaster.

"When I got four runs early, I got a lot of confidence," said the 20-year-old Martin, ranked as the Dodgers' No. 4 prospect by Baseball America. "I threw a few changeups and mixing that in with the fastball, that made my mistakes look better."
마틴은 초반에 타자들이 득점해줘서 자신감이 생겼다고 했는데, 이 외에도 공식홈피에 따르면 그냥 스트라익을 던질려고 노력했고, 좋은 수비수들이 있기때문에 (그들때문에) 자신감이 있었다고 하더군요.

Veteran pitching coach Charlie Hough was impressed, too.

When asked if harnessing a changeup Thursday could give Martin confidence going into his next start, Hough replied, "it could give him confidence for the next 15 years."
찰리 허프 투구코치에 따르면 오늘 체인지업을 적절하게 활용한 것이 자신감의 근원이었다면서 그 자신감은 다음 등판에도 미칠것이라고 말하네요.

Manager Jeff Carter was impressed, too.

"He had good command of his stuff," Carter said. "When you're a young guy, you have to learn how to harness your good stuff. He's already got two above average pitches (curveball and fastball). Now he adds a changeup."

Martin was helped by some solid defense as well.

Catcher Matt Wallach threw out David Paisano trying to steal in the first inning. The Sixers also had two double plays. And center fielder Ramon Jean kept the shutout when he made a leaping, running catch of Mike Bianucci's ball in left-center with a runner on second in the fifth.

"Ramon Jean made a great play there and kept a run from scoring - or worse," Martin said.

Martin has a shutout streak of 15 innings, after tossing six shutout innings against the Quakes last Friday.

The Sixers took advantage of wildness by Bakersfield starter Jacob Brigham (1-5) in the second inning to score four runs. The Sixers had only two hits, but took advantage of five walks by Brigham.

The first run scored on a bases-loaded walk to Steven Caseres. The second run came across on a wild pitch, then Jean's two-run single made it 4-0.

Anthony Hatch produced the final run with a leadoff homer in the fifth, his first of the season and the team's fourth at home this year.
