Kyle Russell – Dunn or Deer?

When I think of Dodger Prospect Kyle Russell, two names come to mind – Adam Dunn and Rob Deer.  Both have (had) prodigious power and both strike (”struck” in Deer’s situation) out way too much, but Dunn actually has a good OB%, albeit a low BA.  Both can hit monster HR’s.  Both made the majors, but only one (Dunn) was a success.  Will Kyle Russell be like either player?  Only time will tell, but Russell who was the third Dodgers pick of 2008, has always exhibited tremendous raw power.  The Houston, Texas native is left-handed power hitter  who stands  6′5″ and weighs 200 lbs. at age 21.  There have been a lot of players over the years who have played for the University of Texas, but Kyle Russell is the Home Run King and holds the Texas HR record.  (다저스 유망주 카일 러셀을 보면 떠오르는 두명의 이름이 있는데 아담 던과 랍 디어이다.두선수 다 막대한 파워와 삼진수가 엄청났다.하지만 던은 좋은 낮은 타율에도 불구하고 좋은 출루율을 지닌 선수이다.두 선수는 괴물스러운 홈런을 칠 수 있으나 빅리그에서는 아담던만 성공을 거두었다. 카일 러셀은 어떤 선수가 될까? 08년도 3라운드에 뽑힌 러셀은 항상 금기시된 뛰어난 가공되지 않는 파워를 지닌 텍사스 태생으로 6피트 5인치에 200파운드로 좌타 파워 히터이다.21살에 텍사스 대학에서 뛰면서 뛰어난 많은 선수들이 있었으나 홈런 킹을 차지했을뿐 아니라 텍사스 홈런 레코드를 세울 정도였다.)

He is currently playing for the Great Lakes Loons (Low Class A) and is hitting .281 (.369 OB%) and OPS’ing  .938.  He has 25 doubles, 19 HR and 59 RBI in 81 games.  He has also swiped 6 out of 7 bases and has 40 BB to go with (GULP!) 105 Strike-Outs.  That’s right, in 299 AB’s he has struck out 105 times!  Before you pass judgement, you need to realize that 40 BB for a young slugger is a step in the right direction, but the fact that he is on track for 200 strike outs gives one pause.  He does possess excellent hand speed and obviously his pitch recognition needs some improvement, but you don’t teach “raw power.”  He has played some CF, but is most suited for RF.  He has slightly above average speed and possess an excellent arm.  (최근 로우 싱글 A에서 뛰고 있는 카일 러셀은 .281 타율과 .369 출루율 그리고 .938 OPS를 기록중이다.81게임에서 25개의 2루타와 19홈런 59타점을 기록중인 러셀은 7번 도루 시도해서 6번을 성공했고 40개의 볼넷과 105개 삼진을 당했다.299 타수에서 105번의 삼진을 당한것이다.200삼진을 당할 페이스지만 40볼넷을 현재 기록하고 있다는 것을 주목할 필요가 있고 뛰어난 배트 스피드와 어느정도 향상된 투구 판단능력을 지니고 있으며 가공되지 않는 파워에 대해서는 가르칠 필요가 없다.중견수로도 뛰고 있지만 우익수로 대부분 뛰고 있으며 약간 더 상회하는 평균 이상의 스피드와 훌륭한 어깨를 지니고 있다.)

At the plate, he does a great job of keeping his hands back and driving the ball to all fields. He seems to have a  good understanding of hitting and frequently takes the ball to the opposite field, because he has the power to hit home runs anywhere in the ballpark.  He can kill any fastball, but like many youngsters who are power hitters he struggles with the breaking and off-speed stuff.  This is something that can be learned, however. 

I think he will see a promotion to Inland Empire before the end of the season and could easily be in AA by the end of next season.  His projected arrival to the big show is probably sometime in 2011.  It all depends upon whether he can continue to adapt.
