I had to pick my jaw off the floor after I heard that Manny Ramirez had turned down a 1-year, $25 million offer to return to the Dodgers next season. ManRam's agent, Scott Boras, is still playing hardball, apparently wanting nothing less than a 3 or 4-year deal in the neighborhood of $25-$30 million per season. Talk about a guy wanting to cash in before it's too late. Ramirez just finished his 16th season in the Majors, and he knows he only realistically has only 1,200 or so good at-bats left in him.

In 53 games, he hit .396 and slugged .743 while averaging an RBI a contest. That's absolutely sick stuff, but you gotta keep in mind, this is a guy who'll be turning 37 this year. There's no precedent for a guy keeping up that level of production this late into his 30's.

Can modern sports medicine and better training methods keep Ramirez productive into his 40's? Maybe, but that's a big maybe, and in my opinion, a maybe you don't want to gamble $28 million on. ManRam and Boras need to come to their senses and realize that in this sort of economy, gambling on an older slugger just doesn't make prudent business sense. But what if a team does cough up that kind of cash for him? In my opinion, it will be the silliest deal since the Atlanta Hawks threw money at John Koncak.
