콜레티, 연장계약 합의

The Dodgers have reached an agreement on a multiyear contract extension with General Manager Ned Colletti.

The agreement was announced this afternoon.

Under Colletti, the Dodgers have won back-to-back National League West championships for the first time in 31 years and have reached the postseason three times in four years, the first such stretch of success since World Series appearances in 1963, 1965 and 1966.

The extension lends a measure of stability to the Dodgers at a time when owner Frank McCourt and chief executive officer Jamie McCourt have separated and are fighting one another for control of the club.

Colletti, whose job was believed to be in jeopardy before the Dodgers' run to the playoffs last season, now has completed four seasons as general manager.

No Dodgers general manager has had a longer tenure since Fred Claire, who held the position from 1987-98. The Dodgers had five general managers between Claire and Colletti, including two on an interim basis.

Colletti never had been a general manager when McCourt hired him to replace Paul DePodesta in 2005, following a 91-loss season that was the Dodgers' worst since 1992.

Many of Colletti's most prominent free-agent signings have not worked out well.

The Dodgers guaranteed Jason Schmidt $47 million knowing he had a torn rotator cuff --they believed he had pitched effectively with it -- and got three victories from him in three years. They guaranteed Juan Pierre $44 million for five years, then moved him out of center field after the first year and out of the starting lineup entirely after the second year.

They also guaranteed Andruw Jones $36 million over two years, coming off a season in which he batted .222 with 26 home runs. Jones batted .158 with three home runs in one season; the Dodgers released him thereafter.

Over the past two seasons, with his budget restricted, Colletti has distinguished himself with low-cost midseason pickups to supplement a core of young players he refused to trade.

Colletti made his first trade under duress, with an ownership mandate to move troubled outfielder Milton Bradley. He snatched minor league outfielder Andre Ethier from the Oakland Athletics for Bradley, then slowly brought along a group of young players that included Ethier, outfielder Matt Kemp, first baseman James Loney, catcher Russell Martin and pitchers Clayton Kershaw, Chad Billingsley and Jonathan Broxton.

During the summer of 2008, Colletti acquired veterans Manny Ramirez, Angel Berroa and Casey Blake from teams that agreed to pay all of the salaries owed to those players. Colletti also added Greg Maddux from the San Diego Padres, with the Padres paying all but $500,000 of his salary.

He fortified this year's team with veterans Ronnie Belliard, Vicente Padilla, George Sherrill, Jim Thome and Jon Garland, at a total cost of about $2 million.
