Dodgers agree to terms with pitcher Claudio Vargas on one-year deal

LOS ANGELES -- The National League West Division Champion Los Angeles Dodgers announced today that they have agreed to terms with veteran right-handed starter Claudio Vargas on a one-year contract. General Manager Ned Colletti made the announcement. (아시다시피 다저스가 클라우디오 바르가스와 1년 계약을 맺었는데 네드 콜레티 단장이 이 딜에 대한 멘트를 남겼군요.)

"Claudio provides us with Major League experience and versatility," Colletti said. "He's won at the major league level and he can start or work out of the bullpen if necessary." ("클라우디오는 메이저 리그 경험을 지닌 투수로 다재다능한 부분에서 우리에게 도움이 될것이고 빅리그에서 승리를 거둘수 있고 만욕 필요하다면 선발과 불펜을 오고가며 팀을 도울 것이다" 라고 밝혓네요.)

Vargas pitched for the Mets last season, going 3-2 with a 4.62 ERA in 11 games (four starts). From 2005-07, the right-hander averaged nearly 11 wins per season and won a career high 12 with Arizona in 2006. The native of the Dominican Republic went 11-6 with a 5.09 ERA in 2007, his last full season and only year with Milwaukee. The Brewers were 16-7 in his 23 starts during the 2007 campaign.

After coming up through the Marlins' system, Vargas reached the Major Leagues with Montreal in 2003 and appeared in 72 games for the Expos-Nationals franchise from 2003-05. The right-hander was picked up by Arizona in the middle of 2005 and went 21-17 for the Diamondbacks over the next two seasons.

This winter, Vargas has been sharp for Aguilas del Cibao in the Dominican Winter League, going 3-1 with a 4.02 ERA (14 ER/31.1 IP) and 31 strikeouts in six starts. The right-hander will be added to the Dodgers' 40-man roster. (도미니칸 윈터리그에서 성적은 나름대로 괜찮네요 곧 40인 로스터에 포함될거라고.그냥 5선발 백업 옵션 롱릴리프 정도 맡아주기를)

Dodgers GM on Manny Ramirez: 'We still have differences'

The Dodgers re-established contact with Manny Ramirez's agent last week and remain in talks to re-sign the All-Star outfielder, General Manager Ned Colletti said today.

"Friday, we talked at length," Colletti said, referring to agent Scott Boras. "We still have differences on what we think, but we're still talking."

Colletti said the Dodgers don't have an offer on the table to Ramirez. In November, the club offered him a two-year, $45-million contract that it  later withdrew.

Colletti said the Dodgers are focused on acquiring pitching, especially in the bullpen. All-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman remains a possibility. The Dodgers remain open to re-signing Takashi Saito, to whom they didn't tender a contract last month. But, Colletti said, "We haven't heard a peep back." The Dodgers aren't among the teams that are pursuing Pedro Martinez, Colletti said.

Martinez's agent, Fernando Cuza, said today that his client has narrowed his choices to two National League teams and two American League teams.

"Pedro feels so strong right now that he doesn't want to do anything but a one-year deal," Cuza said, explaining that he intends to re-establish his value and re-enter the free-agent market in a year.

Colletti declined to discuss the Dodgers' agreement to part ways with Andruw Jones.
