Statistically speaking: Two statistical ratios stand out in showing what Martin can do and what he needs to work on. In 2009, Martin had a 10.8 K/9 ratio, which would have placed him fourth among all full-season pitchers in the Minors had he thrown enough innings to qualify. He also had a 5.49 BB/9, which would have put him in the top five in that category as well.

Scouting report: Martin is a big, strong, athletic and projectable right-handed pitcher with plenty of arm strength. He easily reaches the mid-90s with his fastball and it's got plenty of life. He's got a plus curve to go along with it. He showed a splitter in high school, but that has been shelved and he's been inconsistent with getting a feel for a changeup. He struggled with his command in his first season and wasn't able to pitch the summer following the Draft because he injured his knee, which required surgery, in a fielding drill.

Statistically speaking: After hitting .301 in his full-season debut, Gordon now has a career .311 batting average to go along with a .365 OBP. With the exception of 17 ABs in September (.235), his lowest monthly average since he began his pro career has been the .267 he hit last August.

He's got outstanding range and a good arm at shortstop, though he's got a ways to go in terms of sharpening all facets of his game.
