Albert Minnis' performance in the Class 6A baseball tournament two months ago is what Wichita State would like to see beginning in 2011.

Minnis, a left-hander who led Lawrence to the state championship with a victory and title-game save, gave Shocker coaches an oral commitment Thursday morning. He'll be a senior this season and join WSU a year from now.

Minnis (6-foot, 190 pounds) said he chose the Shockers over Kansas and Clemson after previously eliminating LSU and Nebraska.

"What made the final decision was the baseball program itself," Minnis said. "I really fell in love with the coaches and it's a great place to be."

Minnis was 7-0 for the Lions in the spring, winning a Class 6A quarterfinal game — a three-inning run rule — then returning the next day to pitch three innings for a save in the championship game. He was named All-Class 6A by the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches.

He said his most effective pitches are a slider and fastball that clocks between 88 and 92 mph.

Minnis said WSU pitching coach Brent Kemnitz projected him as a fourth- to seventh-round draft pick next June.

"It would take life-changing money for me to sign pro," Minnis said. "Wichita's where I want to be."

Then, he added, "And tell Mr. Gould he should go to Wichita State, too."

Garrett Gould, the Maize right-hander chosen in the second round of last month's draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, is awaiting an offer after signing with WSU last school year.

Minnis grew up in Phoenix, then moved to Kansas City, Mo., as an eighth grader. He was a standout pitcher at Park Hill High, then moved to Lawrence to live with his father before his junior season.

Minnis is scheduled to play in the annual Area Code Games next week in Long Beach, Calif. He can sign with WSU in November. WSU coaches can't comment on Minnis until they have his letter of intent.
