7라운더 브랜던 마르티네즈

It was easy to find the Martinez house in Fowler on Wednesday.

Out front was a huge banner declaring Fowler High's ace pitcher the seventh-round draft choice of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
벌써부터 플랜카드가 걸렸나 봅니다. 일단 첫 두문장을 읽고서 마르티네즈가 다저스와 계약할 마음이 있구나...하는 생각이 들었습니다. 계약하지않고 대학으로 가버리면 고등학교에서 저런 플랜카드를 걸진 않겠죠.

"Just as I imagined as a little kid," Brandon Martinez said. "Getting the phone call and everyone being excited for me."

The family tracked the draft on a laptop, and the big moment came about 10:30 in the morning.

"Right before that, a Dodgers scout called and asked my dad if I'd sign if they took me," Martinez said. "My dad said yes, and not even a minute later my name shows up on the computer."

Martinez went 5-3 with a 1.24 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 45 innings after recovering from an early-season muscle strain in his back and a stomach virus.
시즌초에 등쪽에 결림과 위장염때문에 45이닝동안 1.24ERA와 85개의 삼진밖(?)잡지 못했다네요-.-;;

Nearly every major league team scouted Martinez. What they saw was a willowy 6-foot-4, 150-pounder with a 94 mph fastball, wicked curve and a workable change-up, and the potential for growth and strength.
영상을 봤는데 너무 말랐더군요. 190cm는 넘는데 68kg은 좀 심했네요. 프로에 와서 체계적인 훈련과 식단(마이너는 햄버거만 먹는걸로 아는데-0-)이면 몸무게는 충분히 늘어날것으로 예상되네요.

"Brandon didn't throw a lot of innings, but that's because we wanted to bring him back slowly and monitor his pitch count," Fowler coach Bill Feaver said. "We knew a lot was at stake ... that he was a top-10 draft pick."

Dodgers scout Chuck Crim said Martinez's injury was no problem in the evaluation process.
마르티네즈를 스카웃했던 분은 척 크라임(Chuck Crim)인데 이 분은 현재 오그던 랩터스의 투수코치죠. 일단 그의 부상에 대해 아무런 문제될게 안된다고 하는군요.

"I saw an outstanding delivery and a quick arm," said Crim, who pitched eight years in the majors. "He's loose and athletic, and I saw a lot of fight in him. And there's definitely an up side to his physical stature."

Martinez said he expects to sign with the Dodgers before the Aug. 15 deadline. He and his dad, Robert, will negotiate with the club in the next few days.

Robert Martinez estimated his son could receive a signing bonus from $130,000 to $150,000.
마르티네즈의 아버지에 따르면 13만달러에서 15만달러면 계약할 마음이 있다는군요. 몇 일 후부터 협상은 시작될거라고 합니다.

"For Brandon it's not about the money," Robert said. "He wants to play pro ball and get his career started. He has confidence in his ability to work hard and make the money in the majors."

타자로써도 잘치더군요.
올시즌 22경기 70타석 65타수 24안타 2루타 3개, 3루타 1개, 1HR 14득점에 .369AVG
를 기록했더군요.

투수로는 10경기 선발에 45이닝동안 85삼진 27볼넷(1HBP)를 기록하고 있는데 한 경기에 17K와 13K를 기록한 날도 있는가 하면 가장 최근의 등판이었던 5월 27일날은 6이닝을 투구하면서 볼넷 8개와 삼진 9개를 잡는 기이한 모습도 보이네요.
