In the supplemental round, three LHPs out of four picks. First Brothers to Colorado, then Aaron Miller out of Baylor at No. 36 goes to the Dodgers. Quick thoughts on all three: Miller could be a coup if he becomes more consistent as a pitcher once he gives up hitting. Paxton was very high on some boards but didn’t perform and has a history of nagging injuries; at times he has premium stuff with a mid-90s fastball and power breaking ball. Phegley has hit throughout his college career but isn’t known for defense and may have to move off catcher.

A 21-year-old junior, Miller was the 36th player selected overall, the sandwich pick coming to the Dodgers from Atlanta as compensation for the signing of Type-A free agent Derek Lowe. The Dodgers forfeited their first-round pick (No. 16 overall) to Arizona as compensation for the signing of Type-A free agent Orlando Hudson.

Miller is 6-foot-3, 205 pounds and a two-way prospect, but the Dodgers drafted him as a pitcher. He went 3-3 with a 5.12 ERA in 13 games, with 65 strikeouts in 51 innings. As a hitter, he batted .310 with 12 homers and 47 RBIs in 186 at-bats.

"Aaron is a physical athlete who has had a limited amount of time on the mound," said Logan White, assistant general manager of scouting. "With the help of our player development staff, we see a bright future for him as a left-handed pitcher in the Erik Bedard mold. He is a terrific competitor and a first-class person with great makeup. ... He's definitely a prospect as a position player, but we like him better as a pitcher."

White was with the Orioles when they drafted Bedard.

Miller was drafted in the 11th round as a hitter by the Colorado Rockies out of high school three years ago, but he wanted the college experience. He played the outfield his freshman year at Baylor and pitched in only eight games his sophomore season. He played in 13 games with Chatham of the Cape Cod League last summer, but his season was cut short after undergoing surgery on his right (non-throwing) shoulder.

"That was weird," he said of the injury. "It really pushed me to start throwing again and it steamrolled into the season. As the season went on, I thought I could do this for a living."

Miller, a friend of Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw from their Texas high-school days, worked out for the club at Dodger Stadium on Monday to seal the deal and indicated he will be a quick sign because he wants to "get innings under my belt."

"The Dodgers are one of the great baseball teams, an A-plus club," Miller said. "I couldn't be more ecstatic."

The last time the Dodgers forfeited their first-round pick was 2005 and it was well spent, going as compensation for the signing of Lowe. They didn't draft until overall pick No. 40 that year and used it on Luke Hochevar, whom they did not sign. White has taken a pitcher with his first pick in the past seven Drafts. The only position player he'd taken first since he's run the Dodgers' Draft was James Loney, a two-way high school star, in 2002.

56. Dodgers - Blake Smith, rhp, California
Smith is a player that went both ways for the Golden Bears. He was hurt a little bit this year, but offers a lot of upside.

Round 2 (compensation pick), Blake Smith, OF, University of California: He's 6-2, 220 pounds and some scouts consider him a pitcher, but the Dodgers drafted him as a power-hitting corner outfielder, especially after the long-ball display he put on during a workout Monday at Dodger Stadium, where he showed a shoulder injury was healed.

Baseball America has this information on him:

"California's lefthanded-hitting, righty-pitching Smith perplexed scouts all spring. At 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, he has premium size to go with athleticism,. He had emerged as a premium prospect last summer with USA Baseball's college national team, when he hit .327 with three homers (second on the team) while also throwing nine scoreless innings, striking out 11. Smith flashes terrific stuff on the mound but struggled in getting hitters out. After early-season difficulties on the mound he has rarely pitched since, finally being relegated only to a DH role by a lat muscle strain. As a pitcher, Smith fires a 92-94 mph fastball, which exhibits fine arm side movement but is straight to his glove side. His 82-84 mph changeup resembles an old-fashioned palm ball, and that pitch shows both arm side movement and "drop dead" action. Unfortunately for Smith, he has poor command and control and gets behind hitters too often. A pitcher with his quality of stuff should not get hit as hard or as frequently as he did this year, when he walked 20 in 20 innings. As an outfielder, Smith has a well above average right fielders arm, and his long, sweeping lefthanded swing produces provocative home run power. However, the length and severe uppercut path of his swing may produce holes that professional pitchers can exploit. Observers who saw him regularly with Team USA last summer believe Smith might be better suited for the everyday player role than working on the mound, and see him as fitting the right-field profile perfectly if his bat emerges. However, plenty of scouts believe in Smith's future as a short stint relief man. To be successful in that venture, Smith must greatly improve his command.  56번픽으로 뽑은 블레이크 스미스에 대해서는 부상으로 인해 투타를 다하다가 올시즌은 야수만 하고 있는데 업사이드에 비하면 상당히 괜찮은 픽이라고 합니다.분명 리스크는 있지만 2라운드를 넘는 업사이드를 지녔다는 것이죠.6피트 2인치 220 파운드로 몇몇 스카우터는 아직도 그를 투수로 간주하나 다저스는 다저스태듐에서 열린 워크 아웃동안 그를 파워히팅 코너 외야수로 뽑기로 결정했다고 합니다.그 워크아웃에서 비거리가 상당히 나왔다고 합니다.

 

 Gould has taken his fastball from 88-91 mph in 2008 to 91-94 mph this spring—and it's not even his best pitch. (구속이 상당히 올라갔는데 그게 최고 구속도 아니라네요.발전 가능성이 상당한 선수인듯.)

65. Dodgers - Garrett Gould, rhp, Maize (Kansas) HS
The Dodgers are doing well for themselves without a first-round pick. We had Gould projected as a first rounder, as he threw 94 mph this spring.

Round 2 (regular pick), Garrett Gould, RHP, Maize High School, Kansas: The athletic Gould, projected as a first-round pick because of a nasty curveball, dropped in the Draft with a commitment to Wichita State. He's still looking for first-round money and just might get it. He's 6-4, 200 pounds and was a quarterback on the football team and a forward on the basketball team. He went 6-1 with a 0.78 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 45 innings

 Garrett Gould, RH, Maize HS, Kansas: Gould’s stock rose throughout the spring because his velocity increased substantially in the last year and because he already possessed an outstanding curveball and a decent changeup. A few scouts have shied away because Gould has a somewhat violent delivery that could cause health issues later on. But just when a team is about to write him off, he changes their mind with that curveball that might be the best among high school pitchers.

 정규 2라운드에 뽑은 게렛 구드는 1라운드 픽에 뽑힐만한 선수로 다저스가 뽑은 선수중 가장 잘 알려진 선수입니다.올 봄만 해도 94마일을 던지며 1라운드가 예상되었는데 대학에 진학 하겠다는 의지가 강해서 픽이 많이 밀렸다고 합니다.1라운드급 금액이면 대학 대신 프로를 택할 수 있는 선수라고 합니다.풋볼 팀에서 쿼터팩을 하고 농구도 했을 정도로 다재 다능한 일명 야수로 치면 맷 캠프같은 스타일인데 더 야구쪽으로 투수답게 더 세련된 선수라고 봐야곘죠.성적도 상당히 좋습니다.6승 1패 0.78 ERA에 45이닝동안 95 삼진을 잡았으니 구속도 작년보다 증가했고 커브볼과 체인지업까지 보유한 선수라고 하죠.다만 약간 거친 딜리버리로 인해 부상 위험이 후에 따를 수 있는 선수라고 평했네요.이 선수와 다저스가 65번픽으로 계약하면 대단한건데 다저스 소식통에 능통한 이에 따르면 계약 할 것 같다는데 모르겠네요.

  Round 3, Brett Wallach, RHP, Orange Coast College: The son of Dodgers Triple-A manager Tim Wallach, Brett helped lead his school to the state title. He throws a hard sinker that White compared to Orel Hershiser's. His brother, Matt, was drafted by the Dodgers in the 22nd round in 2007 and is a catcher in the farm system

 Baseball America's report gives me some hope.

"Wallach is the son of Tim Wallach, a 1979 first-round draft pick who was a longtime major leaguer with the Expos and Dodgers. Brett possesses a nearly ideal frame for a pitcher; at 6-foot-3 he's lanky and projectable. Right now his fastball ranges from 88-89 mph, and his body promises more velocity in the future. His secondary pitches are excellent. Wallach features a slurve, which when thrown well has quick and late break. His changeup is his best pitch, showing sudden late drop while thrown with the same arm speed as his fastball. He has a smooth delivery, and his fluid arm action permits the ball to leave his hand easily. Wallach presents scouts with a complete package. He combines a big league lineage, projectable frame, smooth delivery, and an excellent feel for three pitches."   다저스가 3라운드에 뽑은 선수는 다저스 트리플 A 감독 팀 왈라스의 아들 브렛 왈라스입니다.일명 제대로 다저스 출신 선수를 뽑았다고 봐야곘죠.하드 싱커를 던지고 화이트는 왈라스를 오렐 허샤이저에 비교했다고 하네요.그만큼 기대가 큰 선수라고 합니다.형도 이미 다저스가 07년 22라운드에 뽑아서 포수로 키우고 있다고 하네요.일명 다저스 가족이네요 이런 경우에 선수들의 의욕이 더 생기죠.한명은 빅리그에 올라가야 하니.^^

  현지 팬들의 반응도 처음에 다소 의아했으나 지금은 대개 만족해하는 분위기입니다.특히 오늘은 뒷 픽으로 갈수록 그 픽에 비해서 훨씬 좋은 픽을 해야 했다고 할까요. 첫번쨰,두번째 선택된 선수중 한명만 빅리그에 올라온다면 2009 다저스 드래프트는 대박인거죠.그만큼 저 선수들이 리스크는 높으나 실링은 1라운드 상위픽 감 이상의 선수들입니다.
