The Dodgers' first-round pick, lefthanded pitcher Chris Reed, is a Stanford junior who served as the closer for the Cardinal this year, but is projected by the Dodgers as a starter, according to assistant general manager Logan White.

"Absolutely a starter," White said. "He's got three pitches."

Reed has a fastball in the 90-95 mph range, a slider clocked at 80-85 and a "quality change-up," White said. "As a reliever, he doesn't get to throw (the change-up) as much as he would as a starter, but he shows us the potential of having three quality pitches with good mechanics."

Reed, a graduate of Cleveland High in the San Fernando Valley, is 6-foot-4, 195 pounds. In 28 appearances this year for Stanford -- which is still playing in the NCAA playoffs, after winning the regional at Cal State Fullerton this weekend -- is 6-2 with a 2.54 ERA in 28 appearances, having thrown 49 2/3 innings. He has struck out 48, walked 15 and allowed 35 hits. Opponents have batted .201 against him.

Before this year, he had appeared in 25 games, with a 2-0 record and 7.04 ERA in just 23 innings.

"He hasn't pitched a lot," White said. "He has a fairly fresh arm."

That being the case, the Dodgers will have to carefully watch his development as a starter.

"He's got a high ceiling, but keep in mind his background is limited as far as starting," White said. "We're going to have to work with him, monitor his innings and bring him along the right way to make sure he has a long career. And that's our main concern."

According to Ken Gurnick of mlb.com, Reed is represented by agent Scott Boras.

Signing Reed "is not going to be easy," White said. "... I hope the young man wants to play in his back yard bad enough, here in L.A. with the Dodgers. We'll find out."
