러스 미첼, Stenson Award 후보에 선정

It's been just over six years since Cincinnati Reds prospect Dernell Stenson's death left a huge hole in the Arizona Fall League and baseball community.

The league, as it has each year since 2004, will present one current AFL player with the Dernell Stenson Sportsmanship Award, a recognition given to the player who best exemplifies unselfishness, hard work and leadership.

Last year, it was Phillies shortstop Jason Donald who best reflected those qualities on a daily basis.

"I couldn't believe it at first, that they really thought that much of me," said Donald after receiving the award. "I feel a sense of honor that words really can't describe. I'm just thrilled to have this opportunity to represent my family and the Phillies with this award."

The nominees from each of the six Arizona Fall League teams are selected by their team's field staffs. The winner will be announced Saturday at the circuit's championship game.
이 상은 AFL의 팀 당 한 명씩 후보를 선정한 후 최종 수상자를 결정하는데, 챔피언십 게임전에 발표한다고 하네요. 챔피언십 게임은 우리나라 시간으로 일요일 오전 4시 35분에 열립니다. 양지구의 최고 승률팀끼리 맞붙는 결승전쯤으로 생각하시면 될겁니다.

현재 메사와 스코스데일의 경기를 열리고 있지만, 챔피언십 게임에 올라갈 팀은 이미 결정되었습니다. 지구의 2위팀과의 승차가 벌어졌고, 내일이 AFL 정규일정의 마지막 날이기 때문이죠.

다저스의 마이너유망주들의 소속되어있는 Peo Javelinas는 최근 6경기에서 1승 5패를 하기전까진 정규시즌 10패도 안하고 끝낼거라고 생각했는데, 최근에 좋질 않네요.

암튼 다저스의 유망주들을 한 경기 더 지켜볼 수 있는 기회가 있어서 좋긴 합니다. 람보는 초반에 GS을 2개나 치면서 좋은 타격을 보였지만, 볼넷/삼진이 4/15가 될만큼 선구안은 좋질 않네요. 타율대비 출루율이 3푼 7리밖에 차이나지않는 점은 별로 좋아보이지도 않구요. 단지 장타력이 서든리그에서 4할대 초반에서 AFL에서 .477까지 끌어올린 것은 일단 긍정적이라고 할 수 있을 겁니다.

Stenson was a 25-year-old outfielder playing for the Scottsdale Scorpions when he was kidnapped by several men and shot in his SUV on Nov. 3, 2003. Reginald Riddle, 24, pleaded guilty in 2006 to first-degree murder of the outfielder as part of a plea agreement. David Griffith, 25, one of four men arrested for the crime, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in Dec. 2007 after pleading guilty to murder, armed robbery and kidnapping. He had faced a death sentence.

Ashley, the Rays' sixth-round pick in 2006, enters play Wednesday batting .388 with a pair of homers and 14 RBIs in 17 games for the Dogs. The Indiana State product, who hit a walk-off grand slam on Oct. 26, has six doubles and four triples in 67 at-bats after collecting just 21 extra-base hits in 97 games in 2009. "I'm looking to have a good time, work on my hitting and keep improving as a baseball player," Ashley said of his AFL stint. "I want to try and show everybody how good I can be."

Russ Mitchell, 1B (Los Angeles Dodgers)

Mitchell, a 15th-rounder in the 2003 Draft, struggled a bit during the regular season with Double-A Jacksonville, batting .241, but has turned it on in Arizona, hitting .326 in 24 games. He's 30-for-92 with 25 RBIs and 10 doubles. Mitchell, 24, fell a homer shy of the cycle on Nov. 10 and was named the league's Player of the Week on Oct. 19.

The San Carlos, Calif. native, a Topps Double-A All-Star with Springfield in 2009, has struggled in Arizona after a solid regular season that saw the infielder reach Triple-A Memphis. Descalso, the Cardinals' third-round pick in 2007, is batting .220 with 11 runs scored and three RBIs in 21 games for Surprise.

Matt McBride, C (Cleveland Indians)
Peoria Saguaros
The Indians prospect had 99 RBIs at two levels in 2009 and has continued to rake in Peoria. He's hitting .364 with four homers and 15 RBIs in 20 games. "I'm just trying to swing at good pitches, work counts, get into good hitters' counts and not go out of my zone," he said. "I need to look for balls I can drive, try to hit the gaps a little more." His two-run, eighth-inning homer off Nats first-rounder Drew Storen helped win the Rising Stars Game.

Chase d'Arnaud, SS (Pittsburgh Pirates)

Another AFL Rising Star selection, d'Arnaud has followed up a solid 2009 campaign by batting .278 with 20 hits in 18 games in Arizona. He's hit safely in eight of his last 10 games and has 10 steals in 72 at-bats.
필리스의 유망주인 트레비스 다노(Travis d'Arnaud)의 형이기도 한 체이스 다노(Chase d'Arnaud)는 미래 벅스의 내야진을 이끌 선수로 주목받기 시작하고 있습니다. 일단 벅스가 이번에 아키노리를 데려온 것은 다노의 성장시간을 벌기위함이라는 얘기가 있을만큼 헌팅턴 단장이 주목하고 있는 선수죠. 동생보다 실링은 적지만, 아주 좋은 선구안을 가지고 있으며 빅리그 .270~280대의 성적을 올릴 것으로 예상된다고 하네요.

Bryan Petersen, OF (Florida Marlins)

The UC Irvine product has been on a tear in Mesa, hitting .398 through his first 19 games with the Sox. He's got three homers, 12 RBIs and four steals. "I've just been blessed that the Marlins put me here," Petersen said. "The regular season was a lot of fun, probably the most fun I had in a long time, just being in the trenches with those guys and winning a championship," Petersen said of his time with Double-A Jacksonville. "It kind of snowballed into this. [The AFL] has been a good experience. There are a lot of good players here, pitchers and hitters. I think it's a good measurement of where you're at as a player."

In a phone interview on Wednesday afternoon, Jamey Carroll's agent, Jonathan Maurer, said the Marlins have inquired about his versatile client as a utility man, but they would also prefer somebody with a little more experience at shortstop.

Maurer said he has received interest from 11 teams -- most of them on the West coast, though he wouldn't go into specifics -- and a few have been more aggressive than the Marlins. That makes sense, considering Florida still technically has second baseman Dan Uggla and third baseman Jorge Cantu on its roster. Uggla has been the subject of trade rumors, and if he does indeed get dealt, the Marlins' interest in Carroll could increase.

Carroll, 35, is a good defensive player at second and third base and is a pretty good on-base guy. He also has experience at shortstop -- though he hasn't played it since 2007 -- and has registered 16 career games in the outfield.

In his eighth season in the big leagues this past season, he batted .276/.355/.340, adding 26 RBIs and 53 runs scored in 93 games. For his career, the right-handed hitter has batted .273 with a .351 on-base percentage.

The exclusive negotiating window between clubs and their own free agents ends on Friday. Maurer and the Marlins will likely be in touch more thereafter.

"There's some very aggressive clubs, and we would be very excited to explore Florida in greater detail after Friday, should they call," he said. "But just being frank, I think some other clubs are certainly more aggressive.
