In the stillness of the high desert night, the only sound that echoed across the University of New Mexico baseball complex during the Midwest League's All-Star break came from a baseball finding the sweet spot on the bat of Brian Cavazos-Galvez.

The six-foot, 215-pound outfielder for the Great Lakes Loons didn't spend most of his break under the covers catching up on sleep. And Cavazos-Galvez, the 12th-round pick by the Dodgers in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, has made that decision pay off.

After suffering through an 0-for-11 stretch in his final three games in June, Cavazos-Galvez has been torrid at the plate. He is hitting .407 (70-of-172) since the calendar turned to July and has hit 10 of his 13 homers this season in that span. The right-handed hitting Cavazos-Galvez raised his batting average from .248 at the break to .313, and went on a Great Lakes' record-setting 24-game hitting streak, which he shortly followed up with a 12-game skein. He recorded a hit in 36 of 37 games from July 3 through Aug. 10, shredding Midwest League pitching at a .424 clip.

Cavazos-Galvez traces the turnaround directly to his decision to work during the All-Star break.

"I went home to Albuquerque and I hit a lot," he said of the late June break. "I came back with a better approach at the plate. It's been a real confidence builder.

"My production wasn't where I wanted it to be. I wanted to do more for the team and myself."

According to Cavazos-Galvez, he didn't make radical changes to his swing or his approach. He worked his way through the issue.

"I really didn't change much," he said. "I just wasn't feeling comfortable at the plate. I worked multiple hours during the All-Star break until I got the feeling back. One of my dad's friends, Gilberto Reyes, helped."

Cavazos-Galvez has never shied away from hard work, and he's always taken an analytical approach to his hitting.

"I worked really hard to come back and become more productive," he said. "I like to think of those aspects of my game -- work ethic and being a student of the game -- as positives. I have an unorthodox swing. Everybody has told me that. To me, it doesn't feel weird. Because it is different, I have to be the judge of it and analyze it and work to improve it."

Playing at a different level in a different location has also been turned into a positive challenge by the 23-year-old.

"I've had to work hard and deal with different conditions in the Midwest League," Cavazos-Galvez said. "Last year in Ogden, the ball flies there. In the Midwest League, you have advanced pitchers, and the ball doesn't fly out. You hit a lot of balls here that are outs, but in the Pioneer League, they would be home runs. I've had to learn to make adjustments."

Last season's Pioneer League MVP has enjoyed his second-half surge.

"When you're in a hitting streak, it's a lot of fun," Cavazos-Galvez said. "The main thing is, I want to improve my game and add another dimension to it. I have a lot of drive to improve as a hitter. I really wasn't thinking about the hitting streak while it was going on. I just went up to the plate to do my job."

Cavazos-Galvez's father, Balvino Galvez, pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1986. But he hasn't been a source of guidance as his son carves out his path in professional baseball.

"I haven't seen my father since I was 8," Cavazos-Galvez said. "That's when he left my life. But baseball was an important part of my life. I've loved it ever since I can remember. My mother and grandparents have always been great about encouraging me and making sure I had opportunities to play. They obviously care a lot about my baseball career."
