메츠, 로우에 첫 오퍼, 보라스, 다저스와 접촉

The Mets have acted on their remaining offseason priority, extending highly sought right-hander Derek Lowe a three-year offer for approximately $36 million, according to a report in the New York Times.

Citing "people who have been briefed on the discussions" between the Mets and agent Scott Boras, the Times' report is the first word of a specific offer having been presented to Lowe, who will turn 36 in the spring.

Lowe, 14-11 with a 3.24 ERA for the Dodgers last season, entered the free-agent market with a price generally perceived as $90 million for five years. His suitors have included the Red Sox, Phillies and -- at least until they reeled in both CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett -- the Yankees.

Adding a starting pitcher is Mets general manager Omar Minaya's driving objective. There is little debate about Lowe being No. 1 on that wish list, with the Mets also remaining interested in re-signing their own free-agent starter, Oliver Perez. The left-hander, eight years younger than Lowe, went 10-7 last season with a 4.22 ERA.

Boras represents both pitchers.

Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti recently reached out to Manny Ramirez, calling him his "first choice" for left field.

On Tuesday, Ramirez's agent, Scott Boras, reached back.

Boras told the Los Angeles Times of having contacted the Dodgers, who -- perhaps not coincidentally -- have also begun exploring the availability of free-agent outfielders Bobby Abreu and Adam Dunn.

The market for Ramirez has been slow to develop. The Dodgers' two-year, $45 million offer -- made in October and withdrawn soon after their window of negotiating exclusivity closed on Nov. 14 -- remains the only one yet extended to the 35-year-old slugger.

According to the Times, Boras expects that market to warm up "with the end of the holiday season and the signing of Mark Teixeira."

In an earlier Times story, Colletti had reiterated not having heard from Boras since Teixeira signed with the New York Yankees, a week ago. Colletti labeled Ramirez as his "first choice" in the same article.

"Now, reading that Manny is the Dodgers' first choice, as requested, I have reached out to Ned to begin discussions," Boras told the newspaper.

Following the acrimonious end of his 7 1/2 seasons with the Red Sox, Ramirez reinvented himself with the Dodgers, batting .396 with 17 homers and 53 RBIs in 53 games.
