Reliever Jeff Weaver was sent home from Wednesday's practice with flu-like symptoms, the third Dodgers player this week to fall ill with a bug on the eve of Thursday's National League Championship Series opener (5:07 p.m. PT on TBS) against the Phillies.

Of course, there are worse places to be sent than home. Chad Billingsley, who would have started Game 4 of the NL Division Series if there had been one, has been sent to the bullpen.

Jon Garland, not used in the first round as a long reliever, has been sent to baseball Siberia -- told he will be left off the roster entirely for the best-of-seven rematch with the Phils.

The demotions of Billingsley and Garland are fallout from the rapid recovery of Hiroki Kuroda from a herniated disk in his neck. Kuroda, left off the NLDS roster for the series against St. Louis, passed an Instructional League test with manager Joe Torre and pitching coach Rick Honeycutt watching and will start Game 3 in Philadelphia.

That triggered a chain reaction that claimed Billingsley, the team's leading winner this year, and Garland, who won three games after being acquired at the Trade Deadline.

They weren't the only Dodgers pitchers dealing with a demotion. Randy Wolf, the Game 1 starter in the first round, won't start until Game 4 this time. The former Phillies southpaw went 6-1 down the stretch and led the Dodgers in starts and innings pitched this year, but apparently his 3 2/3-inning start in Game 1 carried more weight with Torre.

"I'm not the one to ask," Wolf said when asked why he thought he was bumped by Clayton Kershaw for the Game 1 nod. "I feel like I have an opportunity in Game 4 to help out the club. I'm happy for Kershaw. He's battled, he's pitched better than his record shows. He's a great kid and I'm excited to watch him pitch tomorrow. He has a great future -- he's a shining star for the organization."

As Torre pointed out, however, at least Wolf gets a start.

"He's one of four. That's pretty special," said Torre. "Being on the roster is special. This is not the time of year to get caught up in what class you're in."

Billingsley took that advice. Even though he has led the club in wins the past two years, he scuffled some in September with a mechanical flaw. And for those with long memories, he was pushed around by the Phillies in two NLCS losses last year. But he wasn't complaining.

"I have no problem with it," Billingsley said of Torre's decision. "I've always told Joe that whatever situation he puts me in, I'll always do the best I can. If this is what he thinks is best for the club, why should I get upset or frustrated? We're here to win games. We're not here for individual achievements."

Billingsley not only has pitched relief in the past, he's done it in the playoffs, throwing two scoreless innings against the Mets in 2006. He recalled striking out Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado to escape one jam.

"I've done it, so the experience definitely helps," Billingsley said.

The real victim of the numbers crunch is Garland, who went 3-2 with a 2.72 ERA after being acquired from Arizona for Tony Abreu.

"I know it came down to Kuroda's health," said Garland. "It wasn't a surprise. I'm a pretty smart guy. I absolutely want to be playing. I don't take it happily. I want to be part of this and it's a tough one to take."

Garland noted that he still could be added to a World Series roster, and he will remain with the team as "a spectator."

"I've had success against both the Angels and Yankees," Garland said. "I'm not writing off the World Series. This isn't my decision to make and there's nothing I can do about it now."

갈랜드가 거짓말(?)을 하네요. 양키스를 상대로는 비교적 괜찮은 투구(11경기에 5승 5패 3.99ERA)를 했지만, 엔젤스를 상대로는 안좋은 결과(14경기에 3승 8패 4.57ERA)를 냈습니다.

The Dodgers will submit a roster Thursday morning that -- barring a late surprise -- will look like this :

Starting pitchers: Kershaw, Vicente Padilla, Kuroda and Wolf.

Relief pitchers: Jonathan Broxton, George Sherrill, Hong-Chih Kuo, Ronald Belisario, Ramon Troncoso, Weaver and Billingsley.

Outfielders: Manny Ramirez, Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier and Juan Pierre.

Infielders: James Loney, Rafael Furcal, Casey Blake, Juan Castro, Ronnie Belliard, Orlando Hudson and Mark Loretta.

Catchers: Russell Martin and Brad Ausmus.

Pinch-hitter: Jim Thome.
내일 최종 로스터를 제출하는데, 거의 확정적이라고 보시면 될 겁니다. 구로다가 들어오고, 갈랜드가 빠진 것 외에는 아무런 변화가 없습니다.

Torre said he will stick with Belliard at second base over All-Star Hudson.

As for Weaver, he had a fever, one day after Martin was sent home with a fever and upper respiratory discomfort. Hitting coach Don Mattingly also has been ailing. Martin and Mattingly were improved and present for Wednesday's workout.
