The Dodgers finalized the acquisition of Jon Garland on Friday, sending switch-hitting infielder Tony Abreu to Arizona as the player to be named in the Aug. 31 trade.

Speculation all along had Abreu, 24, as the final piece of the deal, but the D-backs reportedly were balking because of a grievance the player filed against the Dodgers seeking back service credit for time spent on the disabled list in 2007.

A settlement was reached in which Abreu received an additional 30 days service credit and the difference in salary between his Minor League and Major League rate, a baseball source said.

Abreu had two brief stints with the Dodgers this year, appearing in six games. In 2007, Baseball America listed Abreu as the club's No. 5 prospect, but that year he suffered a series of injuries that led to surgery for a sports hernia at the end of 2007 and surgery for torn hip labrum that cost him the 2008 season.

일단 트레이드 당시에 토니 어브레유(Tony Abreu)가 갈 것이란 루머가 많았는데도 지금에서야 딜이 완료된 것은 어브레유가 40인 로스터에 포함된 선수이고 웨이버 공시를 하니 최소 4개팀이 클레임을 걸어 다저스는 웨이버 공시를 철회했었습니다.

해서 지금에서야 이뤄졌고, 잠깐 얘기가 나왔던 다저스가 보내준 서류에 대해서는 어브레유가 빅리그와 마이너리그간의 연봉 문제와 추가적인 빅리그 서비스 타임 30일을 얻었다는군요.

"Tony is a switch hitter with the ability to play many infield positions and can swing the bat," Byrnes said. "He certainly will be involved in the competition for second base and add depth and flexibility to our roster."
애리조나의 GM은 토니가 스위치 히터이고 다양한 내야 포지션에서 활용되어 애리조나의 댑스를 높여줄 것이라고 하는군요.

In a corresponding move to make room on the 40-man roster for Abreu, the team designated right-handed pitcher Bobby Korecky for assignment.
어브레유를 40인 로스터에 집어넣기 위해 바비 코레키(Bobby Korecky)를 지명할당했습니다. 올초에 미네소타가 웨이버했던 선수인데 1년도 되지않아 다시 웨이버 되는군요.

결국 애리조나가 주장한 것은 어브레유의 서비스타임으로 인해 '슈퍼 2' 조항에 들어갈 확률이 높아진 것에 대한 보상이었고, 그것에 대한 절충안을 타협했나 봅니다.

다저스는 갈랜드를 영입하고 시즌 막판 선발진 댑스를 높였고, 그가 호투를 해줬기때문에 결코 손해라는 생각은 안드네요. 연봉문제도 전액 보조받았고 어브레유에게 줘야할 연봉이 어느 수준인지는 모르겠으나 갈랜드로부터 받은 연봉보다는 훨씬 적겠죠.

어브레유는 위에 말했듯이 분명 좋은 선수이나 다저스는 내야의 왼쪽이 최소 3년이나 묶여있는 상황에 이반 데헤수스와 블레이크 드윗이란 어린 선수들이 있기때문에 어브레유를 내 줄수 있었던거 같습니다. 그리고 개인적으로 어브레유에 대한 믿음이 가지않는것이 에이전트와 꾀병(아직까지 전 이렇게 믿고 있습니다)을 핑계로 태협을 건 사실.....

팀 케미스트리에 결코 좋은 영향이 없는 선수를 데리고 가는 것은 위험한 일이죠. 더군다나 베드볼 히터...
