Wolf faces ex-teammate, friend.
After playing the first eight years of his career in Philadelphia, Randy Wolf has compiled the resume worthy of a hired gun, which is why he's changed teams four times in three years.

He starts for the Dodgers on Tuesday night against one of those former teams, the San Diego Padres, with whom he spent 3 1/2 months and made 22 starts last year before being moved to Houston for a stretch run.

Wolf was in the San Diego clubhouse long enough to strike up friendships. Naturally, one of his best Padres friends will be his opposing pitcher, Chris Young.

So it can work both ways."

Wolf signed as a free agent with the Padres a year ago, but in that year, the franchise was sold and a young team got younger.

"My time in San Diego, we didn't have a good team, but I had an amazing time with the guys," he said. "They were great. If they were winning, it would be an incredible place to be. The club had a great personality. I know it's tough for them now. They don't know what direction the club will go. They don't know if [Jake] Peavy will get traded and he's a huge part over there. The sense I get from them is they don't know. They haven't been talking about increasing the payroll and going that route."

Wolf has decent act to follow, as Hiroki Kuroda allowed only one run in his Opening Day start. On the other hand, Kuroda didn't make it through six innings and all three members of the back end of the Dodgers bullpen -- Jonathan Broxton, Hong-Chih Kuo and Cory Wade -- had to be used.

Pitching matchup
LAD: LHP Randy Wolf (12-12, 4.30 ERA in 2008)
He provides needed veteran leadership, and if he can replace Derek Lowe's 211 innings, even better. The Dodgers would settle for the 190 1/3 he logged last year for San Diego and Houston. Wolf is a battler. And as long as he's healthy, he should give the Dodgers a nice return on his bargain ($5 million) signing. His 12 wins were the most since 2003.

Like a lot of pitchers, Young struggled in Spring Training as he worked into his velocity, gaining more as the spring wore on. The Padres have no concerns about him heading into the regular season. Young, who missed significant time last season after being hit in the face by Albert Pujols' line drive in May, recovered nicely and finished strong, coming close to the first perfect game in franchise history in September against the Brewers. The Padres believe Young can regain his 2007 All-Star form this season. Since the beginning of the 2006 season, no Major League pitcher with at least 300 innings allowed a lower opposing batting average than Young has (.204). Consider the next-closest pitcher, Johan Santana, has a .224 average against him, followed by teammate Jake Peavy (.226).
