기븐스와 재계약

Shortly after Scott Podsednik declined a $2 million salary to play for the Dodgers in 2011, the club announced that another left-handed-hitting outfielder, Jay Gibbons, had agreed to terms on a one-year deal for one-third the pay.

"And I'm very happy to have the job," said Gibbons, who will earn $650,000, with another $150,000 in plate-appearance incentives. "Playing here, living here, I'm very comfortable here and excited to have a chance to win with the Dodgers."

Earlier in the day, Podsednik declined to pick up his part of a mutual option to return to the Dodgers for 2011 and became a free agent. The Dodgers on Tuesday had exercised their half of the option.

Gibbons will provide more power than Podsednik, who would have provided top-of-the-order insurance should Rafael Furcal encounter further injuries. With Matt Kemp in center and Andre Ethier in right, Gibbons figures to be a platoon left fielder or the fourth outfielder, with the versatility to play first base.

When the season ended, general manager Ned Colletti listed three players he would try to re-sign before losing exclusive negotiation rights: Gibbons, pitcher Ted Lilly and catcher Rod Barajas. Only Barajas remains unsigned.
일단 콜레티가 시즌이 끝난 후 기자회견에서 독점 협상기한동안 릴리, 기븐스, 바라하스(Rod Barajas)와 재계약을 하고 싶다고 했는데, 2/3는 실행을 시켰습니다.

Gibbons, who will be 34 next season, is one of the more amazing recent reclamation stories. A one-time slugger for the Baltimore Orioles, he was named in the Mitchell Report on performance-enhancing drugs and couldn't get a job, even when he sent letters to every club asking for another chance.

He tried to make his way back by playing independent league ball but that didn't work out. Gibbons was planning to be a volunteer high school assistant coach in 2010 when the Dodgers called with a Minor League job but no invitation to Major League camp.

Gibbons took it, hit .347 with 19 home runs at Triple-A Albuquerque and earned his way back to the Major Leagues with an August callup. He hit .280 with five home runs and 17 RBIs for the Dodgers, getting unexpected playing time after Manny Ramirez was claimed by the White Sox.

"Right now, it looks like my role will be a left-handed hitter off the bench and spot starter, and I'm happy with that," said Gibbons, who lives in the Los Angeles suburb of Westlake Village with his wife and three children.

"I'm happy to have a job. A year ago today, if you told me I'd have a Major League job with the Dodgers, it would have been a little hard to believe. But it seems like a perfect fit."

Despite the three-year exile, Gibbons has serious Major League credentials. With the Orioles, he slugged as many as 28 home runs in 2002 and 100 RBIs in 2003, when he played in 160 games.

"I expect [management] will bring somebody else in and I hope they do so we can be the best team possible," Gibbons said, speculating on the arrival of a middle-of-the-order hitter. "You never know what can happen. I saw that last year."

Gibbons said he was asked at the end of the season about playing first base. He said there had been some talk about winter ball, but nothing recently.

"I prefer first base, to be honest, but we have a good player there now," he said of James Loney. "I would do it if they asked."

대부분의 다저스팬들이 바라는데로, 그리고 위에 원문처럼 포세드닉이 자신의 뮤추얼 옵션을 거절했습니다. 다만 로젠탈의 소스(& 포세드닉의 에이전트에 따르면)에 따르면 양측은 협상을 계속 진행중이라고 하는군요.

일단 포세드닉이 옵션을 거부한 가운데에서도 협상이 계속된다는 얘기는 더 올려줄 수 있다는 요지를 남겨두고 있는 것이 아닐까 하네요.

What that means for the Dodgers in left field, where they are trying to replace Manny Ramirez, isn't immediately clear. In fact, it wasn't entirely clear that Podsednik would have been the everyday guy there if he had stayed with the club. Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said he will explore the possibility of signing a free-agent left fielder or trading for one, but Colletti also said there might be options within the organization.

"[The search] continues," Colletti said. "It might be a combination of Xavier Paul and [Trent] Oeltjen. Jay Gibbons can get some time there. Russ Mitchell could get time there. As of right now, it is what it is, but we have a long winter ahead of us."
매니가 떠나가면서 다저스는 좌익수를 보강해야하는데, 하지만 포세드닉이 옵션을 실행했을지라도 주전 좌익수를 완전히 보장하는건 아니라고 하는군요. 물론 FA영입도 있고, 트레이드도 있겠지만, 당장은 조직 내부의 자원을 먼저 생각해볼 것이라고 합니다. 조직 내부의 자원이라고 함은 재비어 폴(Xavier Paul)과 트렌트 올첸(Trent Oeltjen)이 되겠죠. 러스 미첼(Russ Mitchell)도 생각해볼 수 있다고 하네요. 다만 오프시즌이 막 시작되었다는 말은 하긴 했습니다.

Paul is a longtime Dodgers prospect with only sporadic big league experience, and Oeltjen is a journeyman minor leaguer who finished the season with the Dodgers. Both remain under club control as long as they are on the 40-man roster. Gibbons is a major league veteran who returned to the majors for the first time in three years when the Dodgers promoted him from Triple-A Albuquerque in early August. He is a free agent, but he also is a Southern California resident who has expressed a desire to remain with the Dodgers.

Mitchell is a rookie who made his major league debut when the Dodgers called him up for the September roster expansion.

Asked if he would prefer to have a major league veteran who could play left field on an everyday basis -- someone like Podsednik -- Colletti said not necessarily.

"I think the best combination, whether it's one or whether it's two or three, is what we want," Colletti said.

The Dodgers also could re-sign Podsednik, but assuming there is a market for his services, it probably will cost them considerably more than the $2 million they would have paid him if he had exercised the option. But Podsednik's numbers after the Dodgers acquired him from the Kansas City Royals on July 28 were less than spectacular. Hitting mostly in the leadoff spot, he hit just .262 with a paltry .313 on-base percentage for the Dodgers, and although his speed was one of the reasons the Dodgers wanted him, he stole only five bases in eight attempts in the 39 games he played for them.

Podsednik didn't play after Sept. 9 because of plantar fasciitis.
다만, 포세드닉을 다저스로 데려온 이후에 허접한 출루율(.313)와 8번의 도루시도가운데 5번만 성공시키면서 다저스가 바라는 리드오프로써는 부족한 감이 있습니다. 또한 9월초에 발바닥 부상으로 시즌 아웃되기도 했었죠. 다저스가 이런 인저리 리포터를 주시하고 있다면 무리한 계약은 하지 않을 수도 있습니다. 발이 주무기인 타자가 나이가 한 살 더 많아지고, 발바닥부상을 안고 있다면 말이죠.

At the time the Dodgers acquired him, Podsednik's option was still a club option. But a clause in the contract -- which without the option was a one-year, $1.65 million deal -- made the option mutual if Podsednik reached 525 plate appearances for the season, which he did shortly after the trade.

The Dodgers would have owed Podsednik a $100,000 buyout of the option if they had declined it. But because they exercised and Podsednik declined, the buyout no longer applies.
