Palo Alto placed senior Joc Pederson on the 30-man first team while fellow senior Scott Witte made the third team. Castilleja was recognized with senior pitcher Sammy Albanese making the 30-player first team as a multi-purpose player. She also was first team all-state as a pitcher for Small Schools in addition to being named Player of the Year for that division.

Pederson also is keeping busy this summer while playing in Hawaii. He's expected to return next week and, perhaps, make a decision to whether he'll play for USC this coming season or sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who drafted him in the 11th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft.

Pederson was sensational for Palo Alto this season while helping the Vikings win 24 consecutive games, another school record. He batted .515 while driving in 22 runs and stealing 22 bases and scoring 53 runs.

Though the Fordham baseball team did not have a Major League Baseball draft pick this year for the first time since 2005, the Rams did have two players sign as free agents this past weekend as catcher Angelo Ponte (Old Tappan, N.J./Old Tappan) signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers and infielder Ryan McCrann (Needham, Mass./Needham) signed with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Both major league baseball clubs continue their ties to Fordham University with the two recent signings. In 2007, Tampa Bay drafted then-Fordham catcher John Mollicone, who spent over two years in the Tampa Bay minor league system. While in 1950, the Dodgers made former Fordham outfielder and WFUV broadcaster Vin Scully their play-by-play broadcaster, which he still serves as today.

A two-year captain for the Rams, Ponte signed with the Dodgers late last week following a career-best season with Fordham in 2010. He set career-highs this past season with a .326 batting average, 46 hits, and 26 RBI. In mid-March, Ponte was a one-person wrecking crew against nationally ranked Miami (Fla.), driving in five runs in the two-game set, including three in a 4-3 win over Miami on March 16th. It was Fordham's first victory over a ranked opponent since 2005.

For his efforts against Miami, Ponte was recognized as a weekly Primetime Performer by CollegeBaseball360.com. Ponte ended his career at Fordham with a .283 batting average 40 runs scored, 17 doubles, four home runs, and 50 RBI in 92 games. He graduated in May with a degree in Sociology with a minor in Business Administration.

It's the news no professional baseball player wants to hear. But Jordan Pratt wasn't shocked when he was released last week by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Pratt, a Central High School graduate, was pitching for the Chattanooga Lookouts of the Double-A Southern League when he got the word that his services no longer would be needed. "I was expecting it a little bit," said Pratt, 25, a 6-foot-3, 212-pound right-hander who was selected by the Dodgers in the fifth round of the 2003 Major League Baseball draft. "I wasn't getting to pitch as much. The last two months I struggled and my command wasn't very good." Pratt made it as high as Triple-A Albuquerque of the Pacific Coast League this season — he pitched in one game for the Isotopes — but he spent the majority of his pro career in Single-A ball. In eight seasons, Pratt was 23-34 with a 5.98 earned run average. Most of his 213 appearances came in relief. "They gave me plenty of opportunities," Pratt said. "They kept me there a lot longer than they needed to." Although Pratt said he could "definitely (still) get guys out" and "hasn't officially retired yet," the time likely has come to turn the page on his baseball career. "I always thought I could get guys out at any level, but I've never been able to put a whole season together," Pratt said. "Even in my better years I would start fast and struggle in the middle."

The Midwest League has named Loons outfielder Brian Cavazos-Galvez its Offensive Player of the Week and pitcher Josh Wall its Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 5-11.

During the seven-day stretch, Cavazos-Galvez went 15-for-31 (.484) with five doubles, four home runs and 11 RBIs. He had a hit in every game during the period including five multi-hit games and is now on an 11-game hitting streak. During the week, Cavazos-Galvez raised his batting average 23 points, from .261 to .284.

Wall fired a complete game shutout against Lansing July 7 in his only appearance of the week. It was the first nine-inning complete game in Loons history. He allowed just three hits and struck out six Lugnuts hitters. The historic shutout came three years to the date of his previous career longest outing, an eight-inning appearance July 7, 2007 against West Michigan. After beginning the season with 11 winless starts, Wall has now won his last five starts during a stretch in which he has struck out 46 batters over his last 35 innings pitched.

It marks the sixth and seventh times the league has honored a Loons player this season for its weekly awards. Cavazos-Galvez is the first offensive player to be honored since Jerry Sands won his third Offensive Player of the Week award on May 10. Wall joins Will Savage and Elisaul Pimentel as pitchers honored this season.
