After re-signing free-agent first baseman Aubrey Huff to a two-year, $22 million contract, Giants GM Brian Sabean told reporters, "One other club accelerated their interest and we played tag with that and were able to get in a position where we matched what the other club did."

Who was that other club?

The Dodgers, according to major-league sources.

It could not be confirmed whether the Dodgers actually matched the Giants' offer, but the team had definite interest in Huff, sources said.

Huff, who turns 34 on Dec. 20, could have fit the Dodgers at first base if the team traded James Loney or in left field as an upgrade over Jay Gibbons.

The flexibility of the Dodgers' roster gives the club numerous options. The team can move Casey Blake to left if it finds a third baseman, and also could add another middle-infield type as insurance for shortstop Rafael Furcal and second baseman Ryan Theriot.
허프(Aubrey Huff)가 SF와 계약할때 다저스도 관심이 있었다고 합니다. 다저스가 관심을 드러내면서 허프에 대한 가격이 올라갔다는 식으로 세이빈이 말을 하는데, 만약 허프가 다저스에 왔었다면 로니를 트레이드하거나 좌익수(Jay Gibbons)의 업그레이드되었을 수 있었다고 하는군요.

일단 시장에서 약간(아주 약간) 오퍼페이라는 얘기가 흘러나오고 있는데, 이런 움직임은 다저스에게 유리하지 않나 하는 지금 당장의 생각이 드네요. 라이벌팀이 약간의 돈을 더 쓰게 만들었으니 말이죠.

Mariners signed knuckleballer Charlie Haeger, left-hander Fabio Castro, infielder Luis Rodriguez and right-hander Chris Smith, the team announced today. All four receive invitations to big league Spring Training.

Haeger, 27, appeared in nine games for the Dodgers this year. He struck out 30 batters in 30 innings, but walked 26 and posted an 8.40 ERA. He has generated strikeouts throughout his five-year MLB career, but has walked 6.4 batters per inning.

The Dodgers hired their former second baseman Davey Lopes as their first base coach on Monday. When news surfaced a week or two ago that he may come to the Dodgers, my first thought was what will be his impact on Matt Kemp's SB total in 2011. Lopes was instrumental in improving the Phillies stolen base efficiency over the last few years, and I think Lopes first task will be to work with Kemp and his base stealing abilities.

In each of his Lopes' three seasons with the Phillies, they've led the majors in stolen base percentage, including the best in MLB history in 2007 — 87.9% (138-for-157). They finished second or third in total steals each of those seasons.
로페즈는 지난 4시즌동안 필리스의 1루 코치로 있으면서 빅리그 도루성공률 1위를 주도한 바있습니다.

특히 롤린스(Jimmy Rollins)는 마이너에서 통산 169번의 도루시도가운데 129번을 성공하면서 도루성공률 76%에 머물렀는데, 로페즈가 필리스로 부임한 4년간 롤린스는 154번의 도루시도가운데 136번을 성공하면서 도루성공률이 88%로 상승했습니다.

로페즈가 부임하기 이전의 (빅리그)롤린스는 259번의 도루시도가운데 207번을 성공하면서 도루성공률이 79.9%였습니다. 뭐 거의 80%이니 괜찮은 도루시도자지만, 로페즈 부임이후 그 성공률이 아주 높아졌습니다.

이외에도 빅토리노와 어틀리 역시 도루성공률이 많이 상승했기때문에 로페즈의 부임은 캠프와 퍼칼, 케롤의 도루성공률 상승의 촉매제가 될 가능성이 높다고 하는군요.

더나아가 머지않은 미래에 빅리그에 입성하게될 디 고든(Dee Gordon)의 도루성공률도 희망적인데, 고든의 마이너 통산 도루성공률은 74%(194번시도 144SB)입니다.

일단 로페즈의 영입에 대해 디 고든은 자신의 트위터에 스프링 캠프가 벌써부터 기대가 된다고 트윗하네요.
